Spring Cleaning for your pets
Spring Cleaning For Your Pets: 5 Everyday Items Worth Refreshing
Spring is the perfect time to throw open the windows and give your home a good clean. While you’re at it, don’t forget about the things your pet uses every day.
From food bowls to bedding, a seasonal refresh is a simple way to keep your pet’s space clean, comfortable and safe. Here are five easy places to start.
1. Give food and water bowls a proper clean
Your pet’s bowls should be washed often using warm water and dishwashing liquid, just like your own plates.
Over time, food residue and saliva can allow bacteria to build up, especially if bowls aren’t cleaned regularly. Stainless steel bowls are often the easiest to keep clean because they’re durable and less likely to develop scratches than some plastic bowls.
If your pet’s bowl is chipped, cracked or heavily scratched, it’s a good idea to replace it.
2. Wash their bedding
Beds and blankets collect hair, dirt and the occasional muddy paw print.
Most removable covers can be machine washed, while some beds can be cleaned by hand. Always check the care label first.
Washing bedding regularly helps keep your pet’s sleeping area fresh and can reduce the build-up of dust and allergens around the home.
3. Check toys for wear and tear
Pets can be surprisingly tough on their favourite toys.
Look for loose stuffing, broken squeakers, cracked plastic or damaged ropes. If a toy is starting to fall apart, it’s safest to replace it.
While you’re sorting through the toy box, consider rotating a few toys instead of leaving everything out at once. Many pets show renewed interest in toys they haven’t seen for a while.
4. Inspect collars, leads and harnesses
Collars and harnesses are easy to overlook because they’re used every day.
Check buckles, clips and stitching for signs of wear. Make sure collars still fit comfortably. You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your pet’s neck.
If anything looks worn or damaged, replacing it before your next adventure is the safest option.
5. Clean your grooming tools
Brushes and combs collect loose hair and dirt over time.
Remove trapped hair after each grooming session where possible, then give the tools a more thorough clean every so often using warm, soapy water if the manufacturer recommends it. Make sure they’re completely dry before using them again.
Clean grooming tools work more effectively and help keep your pet’s coat looking its best.
A little maintenance goes a long way!
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a big project. Spending a few minutes checking the items your pet uses every day can help you spot anything that needs a clean or a replacement before it becomes a problem.
Fresh bowls, clean bedding and safe toys all play a part in creating a comfortable environment for your pet. It’s a simple seasonal habit that’s worth making part of your routine.
