Krypto: The Superhero Pet Parents Didn’t Know They Needed

As the Man of Steel makes his triumphant return to cinemas, it’s not the caped crusader himself stealing hearts… it’s his loyal, face-licking, chaos-causing pup: Krypto the Superdog.

Whether you’re a comic book connoisseur or a devoted dog lover, Krypto is the super-powered sidekick you didn’t know you needed in your life. But who exactly is this four-legged legend? And why are audiences across the world falling in love with him all over again?

Let’s dive into some tail-wagging facts about Superman’s best friend.

Krypto Has Been Around for 70 Years!

While he might be making big-screen waves today, Krypto has been flying through comic pages since 1955. First introduced in Adventure Comics #210, Krypto was originally created as a one-off character – a test subject for Jor-El (Superman’s father) who was launched into space before baby Kal-El. Naturally, things went off course (as they do), and the pup eventually crash-landed on Earth, reunited with a much older Superman.

He’s Not Just a Pet – He’s a Superhero

Krypto isn’t your average pooch, he’s blessed with all the powers of Superman – super strength, flight, heat vision, super speed, and even x-ray vision. Yes, he’s basically a fluffy missile with a waggy tail.

But don’t let the powers fool you. He’s still very much a dog at heart. He chases balls at supersonic speed, he’s fiercely loyal, and he’ll happily give your face a lick before taking down a villain.

James Gunn’s Krypto Is a Little… Unhinged

Director James Gunn, known for his love of misfits and antiheroes, recently shared that the film’s version of Krypto is inspired by his own chaotic pup, Ozu.

“He’s destroyed my entire house,” Gunn laughed during a press conference. “And I thought to myself, ‘Thank God I don’t have a super dog like Krypto. And what if Krypto was as bad as Ozu?’”

The result? A superdog with a bit of bite – both literally and figuratively. Gunn’s Krypto brings a wonderfully wild and unpredictable energy to the screen, balancing heartwarming heroics with laugh-out-loud moments of doggy mayhem.

A Fan-Favourite with a Cult Following

Over the decades, Krypto has built a cult following among comic fans. He’s been a member of the Legion of Super-Pets, appeared in animated TV series, and even starred in his own kids’ cartoon (Krypto the Superdog, 2005). His character speaks to anyone who’s ever had a dog that was more than ‘just a pet’ – a true companion, protector, and best mate.

Why Pet Parents Love Him

There’s something undeniably comforting about Krypto. He reminds us that even Superman, the strongest man in the universe, needs a loyal friend by his side. He’s a symbol of unconditional love – the kind you only really get from a dog who doesn’t care if you’ve saved the world, so long as you’ve saved them a treat.

And in a world full of capes, villains, and plot twists, isn’t that what we all want? A furry friend who’ll stand by us no matter what – even if they occasionally laser-eye the furniture?

See It to Believe It

As Superman soars into cinemas once again, expect Krypto to leave audiences laughing, crying, and maybe even racing home to cuddle their own canine companions. With his heart of gold and powers to match, he’s the superhero sidekick we never knew we were missing – until now.

So grab the popcorn (and maybe a chew toy), and get ready to fall in love with Krypto the Superdog – the ultimate good boy with a bark that can shake the skies.
