Is Your Dog at a Healthy Weight? Use the Body Condition Score to Find Out

Puppies grow quickly, and their nutritional needs are unique during this critical stage. Overfeeding or poor diet choices early on can lead to rapid weight gain, which stresses their developing joints and bones. This can increase the risk of lifelong health issues such as arthritis and diabetes.

Preventing overweight puppies by feeding the right portions of balanced nutrition tailored to their breed and size supports healthy growth and lays the foundation for a long, active life.

Feeding Your Dog to Maintain Its Weight

If your dog has recently lost or gained weight and reached their recommended size, there are two ways to maintain that healthy weight:

  • Continue with the same food used during weight adjustment, but adjust the quantity accordingly, either increasing or decreasing portions to keep their weight stable.
  • Switch to a food with a higher energy density and feed the same quantity to maintain their weight without increasing volume.

Before making any changes, consult your vet. They can advise on appropriate portion sizes and recommend foods best suited to your dog’s specific needs.

Look for dog food with high protein content to support muscle mass, moderate fat to prevent weight gain, and fibre blends that help your dog feel full without eating larger portions.

Sticking to Good Feeding Practices

Consistency is crucial when it comes to feeding habits:

  • Feed your dog at the same place, using the same bowl, and at regular times to build a healthy routine.
  • Avoid giving your dog scraps or extra treats outside their daily calorie allowance. If you want to reward good behaviour, swap treats for kibbles taken from their daily portion.
  • Resist the temptation to give in when your dog begs or whines, it’s easier said than done, but essential for maintaining their health.
  • Weigh your dog monthly and schedule regular vet check-ups to monitor their condition and adjust feeding plans as needed.
