Fact or Myth? Let’s Talk About Cats!
Myth 1: Cats Always Land on Their Feet
Mostly fact – but not always!
Cats do have a natural “righting reflex,” meaning they can often twist mid-air to land on their feet. However, this doesn’t guarantee a safe landing, especially from high places. Falls can still cause serious injuries, so it’s best to keep windows and balconies cat-proofed.
Myth 2: Cats Are Low-Maintenance Pets
Myth.
While cats may seem more independent than dogs, they still require daily care, companionship and stimulation. From regular grooming and clean litter trays to interactive play and quality food, cats thrive on a little structure and a lot of love.
Myth 3: Cats Hate Water
Mostly myth.
Some cats do dislike getting wet, but not all! Certain breeds, like the Turkish Van, are known to enjoy water. Many cats are just cautious around it. Introducing water gradually and using positive reinforcement can help them feel more comfortable.
Myth 4: Cats Can See in Total Darkness
Myth.
Cats can see much better than humans in low light, thanks to a high number of rod cells in their eyes. But total darkness? Not quite. They still need a little light to navigate.
Myth 5: A Purring Cat Is Always Happy
Myth.
Purring is often a sign of contentment, but cats also purr when they’re in pain, anxious, or unwell. It’s thought to be a way they comfort themselves. So if your cat is purring but acting out of sorts, it’s worth a vet check.
Myth 6: Cats Don’t Get Bored of Their Food
Definite myth. Cats can crave variety just like we do! And while they may not beg at the dinner table, they certainly appreciate mealtimes that offer both flavour and interest.
Mixing wet and dry food is a brilliant way to keep things exciting while supporting your cat’s overall health:
- Dry food provides that satisfying crunch and helps maintain dental health.
- Wet food boosts hydration and delivers an irresistible aroma and soft texture that many cats love.
With Royal Canin® Feline, creating a balanced, varied meal plan is simple. Their expertly formulated recipes cater to every age, breed and lifestyle, whether your cat needs help with hairball control, sensitive digestion, weight management or simply enjoys a more indoor life.
And remember, if your cat seems fussy, it might not be the food itself, but how or when it’s served. Try warming wet food slightly, offering it in a quiet spot or using a puzzle feeder to add some mealtime fun.

Myth 7: Cats Can Drink Milk
Myth. Despite what cartoons have taught us, most cats are lactose intolerant. Cow’s milk can cause upset stomachs, diarrhoea and discomfort. Fresh water is always best, or opt for specially formulated cat milk if you’re keen to offer a creamy treat.
Myth 8: Cats Are Aloof and Don’t Bond With Humans
Big myth! Cats absolutely form strong, loving bonds with their people. They may show it in quieter ways than dogs – a slow blink, a tail wrapped around your leg, a gentle head-butt – but it’s no less meaningful. Every cat expresses affection in their own unique style.
The truth about cats?
They’re endlessly fascinating, full of quirks and each one is different. The more we understand them, their habits, needs and personalities, the deeper our bond becomes.
So whether your feline friend is food-obsessed, fussy, playful or shy, there’s always something new to learn…and love.
