Preparing for Your Kitten or Puppy’s First Vet Visit
How to prepare for your first vet visit
Bringing home a new kitten or puppy is a joyful and exciting experience – but it also comes with a fair few firsts. One of the most important is your pet’s very first visit to the vet. Whether you’re a seasoned pet parent or it’s your first time, it’s worth taking a moment to understand how to make the trip as smooth and stress-free as possible for both you and your new companion.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for that all-important first check-up.
Choosing the Right Vet
If you weren’t already given a recommended vet when you brought your kitten or puppy home, you’ll need to find one that’s a good fit for both of you. Look for a practice that:
Has a good local reputation
Is close to home and easy to reach
Offers convenient parking
Is clean, welcoming and well-maintained
Keeps up-to-date medical records and reminders for check-ups and vaccinations
Has modern equipment and emergency services
Offers tailored advice, including nutritional guidance
Some clinics even offer cat-friendly or puppy-friendly environments, with separate waiting areas, calming pheromone diffusers, and patient, gentle handling. This can make all the difference – especially for nervous kittens and pups.
Travelling to the Vet
For everyone’s safety, your pet should be transported in a proper pet carrier or crate. Make it as familiar and comforting as possible:
Leave the carrier out in the days before the visit so they can sniff and explore it
Line it with a soft blanket or item of clothing that smells like home
Use pheromone sprays or calming products if needed
Cover part of the carrier to create a cosy, den-like environmentL
If your pet travels by car, keep the carrier secure and avoid feeding them just before the journey to prevent motion sickness.
At the Vet Clinic
Veterinary clinics can be overwhelming for young pets – new smells, sounds, and people. Here’s how to help keep things calm:
Keep your kitten or puppy in their carrier while in the waiting room, ideally raised off the floor on a chair or your lap
Speak to them softly and avoid sudden movements
Let the vet handle the examination – trust their experience, even with wriggly or uncooperative pets
If your pet is more comfortable inside their carrier, some vets can examine them in place by removing the lid
Some practices offer home visits, but certain procedures and vaccinations may still require a trip to the clinic.
Returning Home
After the appointment, most pets are relieved to return to familiar surroundings. Allow them to settle in at their own pace, and don’t overwhelm them with too much fuss.
In multi-pet households, reintroducing your kitten or puppy needs to be done with care:
Use pheromone sprays to create a calm environment
Rub a soft cloth on both the returning pet and your other pets to exchange scents
Add a blanket or towel used by your other pets into the carrier for the journey home
Supervise early interactions to ensure everyone feels safe and relaxed
These steps are especially important if your pet smells different (for example, from handling at the vet), as this can cause confusion or even conflict among other animals.
A Gentle Start Builds Lifelong Confidence
A stressful first visit to the vet can leave a lasting impression. But with a bit of preparation and care, you can help your kitten or puppy feel safe, supported, and reassured. With each positive experience, you’re setting your pet up for a future of confident vet visits and a happy, healthy life.
